Grandes, pequeños, redondos, cuadrados, rectangulares, lisos, estampados, de algodón, de seda, de lana, de lino....estoy hablando de todas las opciones habidas y por haber de cojines. Al igual que las alfombras, los cojines dan sustancia al interior.

With the extensive range available in colours, fabrics, shapes, designs, choosing those cushions can be quite overwhelming, so in this post I'm giving you 7 KEYS to guide you in order to choose the best type to create a harmonious and visually pleasant space.
I) PALETA DE COLORES: COLOUR PALETTE
No usar más de 3 ó 4 colores en total - aunque dentro de la gama de colores escogida se puede jugar con las distintas tonalidades para introducir más variedad si se quiere.

- Uno estampado y el otro liso: el liso en el color que contrasta del estampado.
- Dos cojines estampados del mismo color : varía la escala del dibujo: por ejemplo un cojín amarillo con flores grandes y el otro amarillo con flores pequeñas, de esta forma introducimos variedad manteniendo una cierta armonía.
O dos cojines de distinto color con un mismo estampado: asegúrate que halla al menos un color en común.
- Tipos de estampados: si ponemos florales, de lunares, geométricos, de rayas, todos juntos seguramente terminemos cazando moscas; moderación es la regla a tener en cuenta: en un mismo sofá dos estampados diferentes es más que suficiente y los podemos combinar con lisos y de diversas texturas y conseguir así descanso visual.

- One patterned and one plain : the plain one in the patterned accent colour
- Two different patterns on the same colour: play with the patterns' scale in order to create variety. If the two cushions are different colour but the same pattern make sure there is at least one colour in common.
- Different types of patterns: if we have too many different patterns in one place we risk to get quite dizzy: in one sofa two different patterns is more than enough and can be combined with plain ones to give the eye visual rest.

III) ¿TODOS LOS ESTAMPADOS JUNTOS Y LOS LISOS A OTRO LADO? / ALL PATTERNED TOGETHER AND PLAIN ONES ON THE OTHER SIDE?
La respuesta es - NO -. Mézclalos para mayor interés visual / Mix them out for bigger visually interest.
IV) ¿QUE TIPO DE RELLENO? / WHAT TYPE OF FILLING?
De plumas, de espuma o sintéticos: Al elegir ten en cuenta qué tipo de uso le vas a dar a los cojines. Si tienen meramente función decorativa entonces ahorra con un tejido en polyester. Si en cambio los vas a usar como soporte lumbar entonces merece la pena invertir en un buen relleno de plumas porque a la larga mantendrán su forma y por tanto su funcionalidad.

Foam, feathers or synthetics: when making your choice take into account what are the cushions going to be used for. Let's say they are just a decorative item, then polyester will keep the shape. However if they are going to be lounged on a good filling such as goose down although more pricey will be worthier in the long term from the point of view of comfort and keeping its shape unchanged.
V) ¿CUANTOS COJINES? / HOW MANY?
Hay algunos que opinan números impares mejor que pares. En mi opinión ambos quedan bien. Los pares (por ejemplo dos a cada lado del sofá, uno liso y el otro estampado) van a dar simetría.

Some consider odd numbers to look better than even. In my opinion both look good since even amount of cushions placed on each side of the sofa will give symmetry.

Perhaps what we need to look at is the amount of cushions in relation to the sofa's size. If we have to keep moving cushions away in order to be able to sit down then it's probably too many.

VI) FORMA: SHAPE
Cuadrados, rectangulares, "bolster" y redondos. A la hora de elegir la forma tendremos en cuenta la función y el estilo de los muebles. Para un buen soporte de espalda los cuadrados son una de las mejores opciones. Los rectangulares son buenos para el cuello y la zona lumbar. Si tenemos en cuenta el estilo de los muebles entonces para un tipo de sofá de lineas rectas, austeras y minimalista cojines redondos suavizarán la rigidez percibida visualmente. Para un sofá mullido unos cojines cuadrados o/y rectangulares sería la apuesta más acertada.

Square, rectangular, bolster, rounded. To choose among so many different shapes look at your furniture's style and function of the cushions. To get a good back support square are on of the best options. Rectangular are good for the neck and lower back. If the style of sofa is contemporary with straight lines round cushions will soften the hard perception, on the other hand for a fluffy couch square and rectangular cushions good look the best.
El tipo de decoración de la estancia es importante a tener en cuenta pues éste va a determinar qué tipo de tejidos, colores y texturas se van a emplear.
En un entorno clásico tejidos como el terciopelo y la seda y de estampados brocados forman una perfecta combinación.

It is important to keep into account the style of the room since this is going to determine the type of fabrics, colours and textures to be used.
In a classic surrounding fabrics such as velvet, silk, brocades are some of the options to consider.

Para diseños más modernos una paleta limitada con estampados geométricos o lisos completamente y tejidos suaves como el algodón y el lino.
Para un estilo ecléctico, una mezcla de cojines en diversos tejidos pero con el color como común denominador para obtener un estilo coherente.

For modern designs a limited palette with geometric patterns or completely plain and soft fabrics like cottons and linen.
For an eclectic style a mix of cushions in different fabrics but with colour as common denominator to get a cohesive look.
